  • Black History fact of the day: Albert Luthuli was a Chief, teacher, and activist who made history for being the first African awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960. He led millions of people in a nonviolent campaign to end apartheid, a system of racial segregation in South Africa that lasted from 1948 to the early 1990s. To try and stop his efforts, authorities arrested and accused him of treason, but Albert refused to stop and his dedication to nonviolent resistance earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. He was involved in many causes and worked to improve the lives of his fellow citizens.
