- Black history fact of the day: Allensworth, the 2025 Eaton Fire Devastates Historic Altadena, Displacing Black Families and Destroying Legacies. Altadena has long served as a refuge for Black families seeking asylum from systemic racism. When African Americans moved west during the Great Migration, Altadena offered relative affordability. By the 1920s, a thriving Black community had taken root and flourished. The Eaton Fire has destroyed nearly 1,000 structures in Altadena, displacing a community of Black families. From fire to earthquake, this is the latest chapter in a long history of resilience for the Black community of Altadena.
