Today is a blue day. You will be logging in to your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd periods.
Toussaint Louverture was born in 1743 as a slave in the French colony of Saint Domingue. He became a freedman and began his military career strong, helping lead the 1791 slave rebellion in Saint Domingue. By building up his political influence, he was able to gain control of the island and focused on restoring Saint Domingue. He established trade with the US and the UK, secured a strong army, and improved the plantation system by using paid labor. Under his leadership, a new constitution was adopted by the colony, which named him governor for life. In 1802, he was arrested upon his arrival to France and jailed, until he died in 1803 due to lack of food or water. Despite his death coming before the final phases of the Haitian Revolution, his achievements set the stage for the Haitian victory, and he is forever regarded as the “Father of Haiti”.
