Highland Logo Branding our 50th Year

This week's Hispanic historical figure is Simón Bolívar! Born to a wealthy family on July 24, 1783 in the Kingdom of Venezuela, he was heavily influenced by the Enlightenment ideas he was exposed to while studying abroad in Europe. These Enlightenment teachings inspired Bolívar to call for the overthrow of Spanish rule of South America, which he put into action following Napoleon’s invasion of Spain. Simón was a gifted general, proven by his liberation of Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru, which he later united to create the Gran Colombia, a single nation. He served as President of Gran Colombia as well as dictator of Peru until 1830, where he first resigned and later died at the age of 47. Forever regarded as “El Libertador”, Simón has become a key part in the national identities of the countries he led.
