Club News
If you are looking for an academic activity than Academic Decathlon is for you. Academic Decathlon is a club/competition team. It is designed to include students from all achievement levels and grades. Teams generally consist of nine members, who are divided into three divisions based on a custom calculated grade point average (Links to an external site.): Honors (3.75–4.00 GPA), Scholastic (3.00–3.74 GPA), and Varsity (0.00–2.99 GPA). If you make it on the team you will compete in all ten events against other students in his or her division, and team scores are calculated using the top two overall individual scores from each team in all three divisions. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded for individual events and for overall scores.
This year the competition will be virtual instead of in person. Academic Decathlon can help you with time management, study skills, test taking strategies, public speaking and interview skills. It is also a great way to meet new friends and be a part of a group. By participating on the team will give you opportunities for college scholarships, earn college credit and it looks good on college applications. It is a lot of work and you do need to spend time studying the materials and doing the assignment outside of class if you want to do well. We try to make it fun and there are other coaches that will work with you. Our topic this year is the “Cold War” and you don’t need to know much about the topic beforehand but it does help. There have been many students who have been part of the team who were also involved in other things (sports, ASB, other clubs, Band, Drama, FFA).
We will meet at least once or twice a week in the afternoon via ZOOM. Our first meeting will be Wednesday Sept 2 at 1:30. When we get back to in person school we will meet 0 period instead of the afternoons and we will also do ZOOM meetings for those that can’t come to 0 period. If you are interested Email Mrs. Mayo and she answer any questions or add you to the class to see the materials. .
